Fashion Art: Part I – Fashion as Art

Preface

Art {noun}: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

Act I

I am fully aware that I express fashion and art in a synonymous manner.  This is not something I do out of ignorance – this is something I do out of potent conviction.

I’m also entirely mindful of the fact that my fashion photography doesn’t always depict images of models, clothing, makeup, accessories, beauty, celebrities, or the other types of content you’d expect from a fashionista.  That’s because in my collections, I hope you’ll find hints of the fashion of the world itself and the traces of style that humans leave everywhere they go.  This appears in nature, interior arrangement, artifacts, ancient fine arts creations, those traditional fashion subjects I mentioned previously, etc.

My personal modeling follows a similar pattern – myself in a vision of my own style and the style I strive to have for myself.

So, my “fashion” photography and modeling isn’t what pop culture says it’s supposed to be, and you’ll find that this blog section exists on a similar brainwave.  My work is currently all about the overlooked fashion that is splattered all across the canvas of our world – and yes, I do fashion it through the goggles of my own essence, which are, in fact, tinted with Amaranthine.

Great!  Now that we’ve covered that, let’s discuss why fashion and art can be considered one and the same in countless scenarios.

Act II

Back when I was a teenager, I began to view fashion as a daily way to live in one’s own personal art form.  Sure, fashion is an international, heavily financial industry – but it’s so much more than that.

As I entered adulthood, I saw more and more evidence that I was not the only person who saw fashion this way.  I witnessed it in how people dress in ways that scream volumes about who they are.  I noticed it in how some designers occasionally fashion their newest lines to reflect current events in the world and in their own lives.  I saw it in my own style every time I walked past a reflective surface and saw my dark cat eyes gaze back at me.

As the art behind fashion began to show me its cards, I knew I was right: fashion and art are more closely intertwined than the world cares to recognize.

Now it’s 2017, and fashion art is all the rage.  You’ve seen it.  If you haven’t, try out “#fashionart” and check it out – it’s a phenomenon that you definitely don’t want to miss out on.  People have taken fashion and art and carefully smashed them together (digitally too!); needless to say, the results are glorious.

Act III

Run this through your own goggles before you make up your mind about it.  Think about your boldest fashion choices – those are risks you’ve taken, dares you’ve placed upon yourself to break free, discover yourself, and be who you are.

And that, my friends, is art.
